Survey Says...Teach the Controversy!

You probably have not heard the news—and if the popular media has anything to do with it, you won’t hear about it. From February 27 to March 2, 2006, a telephone survey was conducted by Zogby International that showed Americans overwhelmingly supported teaching scientific challenges to Darwinian evolution. The secular media has not only buried the story, most media outlets have not informed the public at all about this latest poll. Casey Luskin, who works with the Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture noted: “This poll shows widespread support for the idea that when biology teachers teach Darwin’s theory of evolution they should present the scientific evidence that supports it as well as the evidence against it” (Crowther, 2006).

The telephone survey was conducted with a random sample of 1,004 individuals, who were selected from national telephone listings. The results of the survey indicate that Americans want biology teachers to teach, not only evolution, but also the problems with the evolutionary theory. Sixty-nine percent of those questioned indicated that “biology teachers should teach Darwin’s theory of evolution, but also the scientific evidence against it” (“Results from...,” 2006). Only 21% of individuals surveyed believed that only Darwin’s theory of evolution should be taught. This means that by a factor of more than three to one, voters believe biology teachers should teach Darwin’s theory of evolution, but also the scientific evidence against it.

Additionally, 77% of individuals surveyed agreed with the following statement: “When Darwin’s theory of evolution is taught in school, students should also be able to learn about scientific evidence that points to an intelligent design of life” (“Results from...,” 2006). Only 19% of those surveyed disagreed with that statement. This means three-fourths of those surveyed believed that students should be exposed to the concept of intelligent design along with evolution. And yet, courtrooms are refusing to allow this to happen.

In Abraham Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg address he concluded by noting: “that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth” (emp. added). The people have clearly spoken. The survey results make it absolutely clear. Unfortunately, the concepts of naturalism, materialism, and atheism are having a greater impact than the voice of the majority of people.

Intelligent design writer Jonathan Witt recently interviewed David Berlinski, a mathematician who received his Ph.D. from Princeton, on the attitudes and direction of those in the scientific community. The first question he asked was, “Why do you think the debate about Darwin’s theory of evolution has taken on such a nasty turn?” Berlinski’s response: “[Y]ou raise a good question. Why are Darwinian biologists so outraged? Like the San Andreas fault, the indignation conspicuous at blogs such as The Panda’s Thumb or Talk Reason is now visible from outer space. There is a lot at stake, obviously. Money, prestige, power, influence—they all play a role” (Witt, 2006, emp. added). How tragic that the American people have spoken and yet the media remains mute in communicating the majority opinion.
